Bed Frame Dimensions: How Much Bigger Than the Mattress
A bed frame is meaningfully bigger than the mattress inside it. Measured across the bed frames we carry, the median queen frame is 68 inches wide against a 60 inch mattress, and the median king frame is 82 inches against 76. Plan the room around the frame, not the mattress size on the box.

Frame width by size
Mattress sizes are standardized: a twin is 38.5 inches wide, a full 53.5, a queen 60, a king 76, and a California king 72. Frames are not standardized at all, and they are always wider. Measured across the bed frames we carry, the medians come out at 44 inches for twin, 61 for full, 68 for queen, and 82 for king.
That gap is the number that bites people. A queen frame at 68 inches is more than half a foot wider than the mattress, and upholstered or wide-rail designs push past 70. If your plan says a queen fits with 24 inches of walkway on each side, run the math with 68, not 60.
Length and the footboard question
Frames run long as well as wide. Measured head to foot, queen and king frames in our catalog both land in the mid 80s at the median, roughly 5 to 7 inches past the 79.5 inch mattress inside them. Footboard and storage designs sit at the long end of that spread.
If the foot of the bed faces a doorway or a dresser, the frame length is the number to check on the product page. A footboard eats walkway you probably counted on.
Headboard height
Headboards cluster tightly: the median across the bed frames we carry is 50 inches, floor to top, and that holds across sizes. At that height a headboard clears most windowsills and reads as a piece of furniture without dominating the wall. Statement headboards run taller, and low platform designs run shorter, so check the height field on any bed where the wall matters, especially under windows or sloped ceilings.
Fitting the room
The working rule is simple: take the frame's real width and length from the product page, then leave at least 24 inches of walking space on each side you need to walk on, and closer to 36 in front of a dresser or closet. In a 12 by 12 foot bedroom, an 82 inch wide king frame leaves about 31 inches per side once it is centered, which works; add a long footboard design against a wall with a swing-in door and it gets tight. Measure the room, then shop by the frame numbers.
